NYT Spelling Bee Strategy Tips
How to climb from Beginner to Queen Bee.
Find the pangram first
The pangram uses all 7 letters and gives you a large point bonus. Start by trying to combine the center letter with every outer letter and look for a word that uses them all. Pangrams are usually 7 to 10 letters long.
Every word must contain the center letter
This is the one rule players forget under pressure. A word made entirely from outer letters does not count. If a guess is rejected but looks valid, check whether the center letter is included.
Try common word endings
Once you know your letters, systematically try endings: -ING, -TION, -NESS, -LESS, -FUL, -LY, -ED, -ER, -EST. Many Spelling Bee answers share common suffixes, and testing them against the center letter surfaces words you would not think of otherwise.
Words can repeat letters
Unlike Wordle, Spelling Bee allows repeated letters. If the center letter is E, then ELLE, FEEL, KNEEL are all valid structures. Double and triple uses of one letter are common in the answer list and easy to miss.
Proper nouns and obscure words are excluded
The NYT editors curate the word list. Proper nouns (names, brands, places) are never accepted. Very obscure or archaic words are also excluded. If you know an unusual word is technically valid but the game rejects it, it may simply not be in the curated list.
Work through prefixes systematically
If the letters include common prefixes (UN-, RE-, PRE-, OUT-, OVER-), try each of them as the start of a word with every combination of remaining letters. This is one of the most efficient ways to discover words you were not thinking of.
