Words containing any letter
Two different questions get typed the same way. If you are holding a rack of letters and want the words you can make from them, you want the word unscrambler. If you know a word contains a letter and want every word that does, you are in the right place.
The difference in one line: unscramble asks "what can I make out of R, S, T, A, E?" while the letter lists below ask "which words have an A in them somewhere?" The first is bounded by the tiles you hold, the second is not.

Every letter of the alphabet, A to Z.
Why "contains" searches matter
Outside of words like "qi", English pairs Q with U in nearly every case: quiz, quick, equal.
If the letters are a fixed rack you must build from, that is the unscrambler, not this.
Q, X, J, and Z score highest. Search for words containing them to find plays worth real points.

About finding words with specific letters
Worth settling first, because one phrase gets typed for two incompatible questions. Most people searching "words with letters" mean "words I can make from these letters", which is an anagram question: the tiles in your hand are the entire supply, and the word unscrambler is the tool that answers it. This page answers the other version, "which words contain this letter", where nothing limits what else the word is made of.
Unlike the starting and ending tools, a "contains" search ignores position entirely: it finds any word with your target letter or letters somewhere inside it. That makes it the right tool whenever you know a letter belongs but not where, which happens constantly in word games.
The clearest example is a Wordle yellow tile: right letter, wrong spot. Instead of guessing blindly, filter this list to 5 letters and browse words that contain your yellow letter, then test it in a new position on your next guess. Scrabble players lean on this tool for difficult tiles like Q, X, J, and Z, since finding any valid play beats holding a high-value letter you can't place. Anagram solvers and crossword fans use it the same way, searching for a cluster of letters without worrying about order.
Every result draws from the same word database used across this site, so counts stay consistent with the starting-letter and ending-letter tools.
Contains searches, answered
I have a rack of letters, is this the right tool?
Probably not. If you want the words you can build out of a fixed set of tiles, that is anagram solving and the word unscrambler handles it. Use this page when you only need words that contain a letter, with no restriction on the rest.
Does this tool care where the letter appears in the word?
No. Unlike the starting and ending tools, this one matches the letter or combination anywhere in the word, start, middle, or end.
How do I use this for a Wordle yellow tile?
Pick the yellow letter above, filter to 5 letters, then scan for words that fit your other known clues. See our 5-letter word list for the full Wordle-length set.
Can I search for a letter that must appear twice?
Type the letter twice in the search box (e.g. "ss") to find words with that letter repeated in sequence.
Is this different from words starting or ending with a letter?
Yes. Use words starting with for the first letter or words ending in for the last one; this tool ignores position entirely.
