NYT Strands Strategy Tips
Find the spangram faster and use the hint system to your advantage.
Read the theme clue carefully
The one-word or short theme clue is your biggest weapon. Think about it both literally and figuratively before you touch the grid. Many solvers jump in too fast and miss the intended interpretation.
Find non-theme words to earn hints
Any real English word you find that is not a theme word earns hint tokens. Finding 3 non-theme words unlocks one hint, which highlights the letters of a theme word. Use this deliberately when stuck.
The spangram spans edge to edge
The spangram must touch both sides of the grid (top to bottom or left to right). Look for longer letter paths that cross the full width or height. It is usually 6 or more letters and describes the theme.
Words can change direction mid-path
Letters do not need to go in a straight line. A word can zig-zag diagonally, turn a corner, and backtrack. If a word seems impossible in a straight line, try tracing it through bends.
Work from the edges inward
Corner and edge letters have fewer neighbors, which limits how many words they can belong to. Starting your search from the outer edges often makes theme words easier to isolate.
Theme words fully tile the grid
Every letter in the grid belongs to exactly one theme word or the spangram. No letter is left over. If you have found most theme words, the remaining letters must form the rest, narrowing your options.
