Games Like NYT Spelling Bee: 7 Letter-Set Word Games

Chasing Queen Bee and need another fix? These word games give you a fixed set of letters and ask how many words you can build.

Spelling Bee is the slow-burn puzzle of the daily set. Seven letters, one required center letter, and a long list of words you swear you know but can’t quite find. Some people chip away at it all day.

If you want more of that feeling, here are the games that hand you a fixed set of letters and ask what you can make.

The closest relatives

Blossom

Blossom, from Merriam-Webster, uses the same shape: a required center letter and six petals. The twist is that you only get twelve words, and scoring rewards long words and the bonus petal letter. Spelling Bee is about finding everything. Blossom is about choosing well. Blossom hints.

Squaredle

Squaredle swaps the honeycomb for a grid. You build words by tracing through adjacent letters, and the daily puzzle has a set list of words to find. It scratches the same “how many can I get?” itch, with a bit of spatial thinking added.

NYT Letter Boxed

Letter Boxed also gives you a fixed letter set: twelve letters on the sides of a square. The goal flips, though. Instead of finding as many words as possible, you try to use every letter in as few words as you can. Letter Boxed answers.

Unscramble-style games

Daily Jumble

The newspaper original. Unscramble a handful of words, then rearrange the circled letters to answer a cartoon’s pun. Short, classic, and good anagram practice. Jumble answers.

Waffle

Waffle hands you every letter already on the board, scrambled across six five-letter words. You swap letters until the grid reads correctly. It is anagramming with a strict swap budget. Waffle solution.

Board-game style

Scrabble and Words With Friends

If the part of Spelling Bee you love is knowing obscure words, a rack of seven tiles is the natural next step. The same vocabulary wins games. When you are learning, our Scrabble word finder and Words With Friends word finder show what a rack can make.

NYT Strands

Strands is a themed word search rather than a letter-set game, but Spelling Bee players often like it because the long theme word, the spangram, feels a lot like hunting for a pangram. Strands hints.

Climbing the Spelling Bee ranks

Most players stall at Genius because they stop looking for word endings. Once you find a root, try every suffix the letters allow: -ING, -ED, -ER, -LY. Double letters count, so if a word works with one L, check it with two. When you are truly stuck, our Spelling Bee hints show the two-letter starts and word counts, so you know where words are still hiding without seeing them. The anagram solver helps with practice outside the daily puzzle.
