Waffle Strategy Tips

How to solve the waffle grid in as few swaps as possible.

Green letters never need to move

Any letter already highlighted green is in its correct position. Never swap a green letter. Start by mentally removing green letters from your plan so you only focus on the white letters that need rearranging.

Work with the intersections first

The 5 intersection cells (where a row word and a column word cross) are the hardest to resolve because each swap affects two words at once. Prioritize getting intersection letters correct before fixing the non-intersection letters in each row or column.

Yellow means the letter is in the wrong row or column

A yellow letter appears somewhere in the word but not in the right spot. After each swap, the color feedback updates. Use yellow letters as candidates to fill the correct slot in the same word rather than swapping them far across the grid.

Solve one word fully before moving on

Pick the word with the most green letters already and complete it first. Locking in one full word eliminates ambiguity for all the cells that word shares with crossing words, which often cascades into rapid progress on the rest of the grid.

Avoid wasteful swaps

A wasteful swap moves a letter to a position that is not its final destination. Before swapping, ask: "Is this where this letter belongs in the solution?" If not, find the letter that does belong in that target position and plan a direct swap.

The minimum swaps is always less than 15

The game allows 15 swaps and rates your performance in stars based on how few you use. A perfect solve typically takes 10 or fewer swaps. If you are near 15, focus on the fewest remaining white letters rather than chasing a perfect star rating.
