Hints, one at a time

Welcome back, puzzler. Betweenle #1,255 for Saturday, August 22, 2026 is live. Every guess you make tells you whether the hidden word sits earlier or later in the alphabet. Think binary search, but with words.

Here's how this page works: the hints below start by narrowing the stretch of the alphabet you should be searching, then fill in letters, so reveal them one at a time and stop the moment the range feels small enough. The full word sits in the blue box further down, locked behind a tap. Nothing here reveals itself on its own, not a letter and not the hidden word.

Range first, letters after. Stop when the alphabet narrows enough to see it.

Betweenle strategy that actually helps

Proven habits from top solvers, useful today and every day.

Split the range in half

Your first guesses should land near the middle of the current alphabetical window. Words like MOUNT or RATIO cut the search space roughly in half.

Watch the per-letter arrows

Beyond before/after, each letter position gives its own clue. Use them to test candidate patterns without wasting full guesses.

Use common five-letter words

The answer comes from a standard word list, so everyday vocabulary makes the best probes. Rare words waste a turn without narrowing much.

Narrow, then pattern-match

Once the range is tight, stop bisecting and start listing words that fit the letters you know. There are usually only a handful left.

Think about endings

Common endings like -IGHT, -OUND, -ATCH cover lots of dictionary ground. Testing an ending early can eliminate whole families of words at once.

No penalty for exploring

Betweenle has unlimited guesses, so a wrong-feeling probe still teaches you something. When unsure, guess something rather than stalling.

How to play Betweenle

The rules in full, for anyone arriving without them.

Betweenle hides one five-letter word and tells you where it sits alphabetically relative to your guesses. It plays less like Wordle and more like a binary search through the dictionary.

  1. 1 Guess any five-letter word

Your opening guess is a probe. A word starting near M splits the alphabet roughly in half.

  2. 2 Read the before and after arrows

The game tells you whether the hidden word comes earlier or later in the alphabet than your guess, and it does this letter by letter as well as for the word as a whole.

  3. 3 Narrow the range

Each guess should land between your current bounds. Guessing outside the known range tells you nothing you did not already know.

  4. 4 Close in on the word

Once the first two or three letters are pinned, the remaining range is small enough to reason through directly.

Betweenle punishes vocabulary showing off. The best guess is rarely an interesting word, it is whichever ordinary word sits closest to the midpoint of the range you have left.

Betweenle, answered

Quick answers to the questions we get every day.

How often does a new Betweenle puzzle come out?

A fresh hidden word is published every day. If the puzzle number above matches the latest game on betweenle.com, you're looking at today's.

How does Betweenle work?

One secret five-letter word is hidden somewhere in the dictionary. Every guess tells you whether the secret word comes alphabetically before or after it, plus how close your guess sits on each letter. Keep splitting the range until you land on the word itself.

What do the arrows mean?

Each guessed word shows whether the answer is earlier or later in the alphabet, and every individual letter gets its own before/after/here indicator. It plays like a binary search with vocabulary.

Is Betweenle just Wordle with extra steps?

They share a five-letter answer and nothing else. Wordle tells you which letters are correct; Betweenle tells you where the answer sits alphabetically relative to your guess. That makes it a search problem rather than a deduction problem, and it rewards ordinary midpoint words over clever openers.
