NYT Crossword Difficulty by Day: Monday to Sunday Explained

The NYT Crossword gets harder from Monday to Saturday, while Sunday is bigger rather than harder. Here is what to expect from each day of the week.

The New York Times Crossword gets harder as the week goes on. Monday is the easiest puzzle, Saturday is the hardest, and Sunday is a larger grid pitched at about a Wednesday or Thursday level. If you are new to it, that schedule is the most useful thing to know.

The curve at a glance

The NYT Help Center says the crossword “increases in difficulty from Monday to Saturday,” and that the Sunday puzzle is “approximately on the same difficulty level as the Wednesday or Thursday puzzle” and larger than other daily puzzles.

Day by day

Monday and Tuesday

These are the entry point. Clues are mostly direct definitions, and the theme, when there is one, is usually easy to spot. If you want to learn how crossword clues work, start here. Our Mini crossword speed tips cover habits that carry straight over.

Wednesday

Wednesday is a useful marker. Sunday’s puzzle is pitched at about this level, so a comfortable Wednesday means a Sunday is within reach. Expect to lean on crossing letters more than you did on Monday.

Thursday

Thursday has a reputation for tricks. Monday to Thursday puzzles usually have a theme, and on Thursday the theme often asks for something unusual, such as more than one letter in a single square. When a Thursday answer won’t fit, suspect the grid before yourself. A pattern-based crossword solver can’t help with a trick square, so look at the long answers for a pattern first.

Friday and Saturday

Friday and Saturday puzzles are almost always themeless, with fewer black squares and more long answers. With no theme to lean on, every clue has to be solved from its own wording and crossings. Saturday is the hardest puzzle of the week, so don’t judge your skill by it.

Sunday

Sunday is bigger, not harder. At 21 by 21 it takes much longer than a weekday, but the difficulty is closer to mid-week. If Wednesday feels comfortable, Sunday is a good use of an unhurried morning.

Which day should you start on?

  • Brand new: Monday, and then do Mondays until they feel fast.
  • Comfortable with Monday to Wednesday: Try Thursday, and learn to expect a gimmick.
  • Want a long solve: Sunday, which is long rather than punishing.
  • Want a challenge: Saturday, but only after a few Thursdays.

Is the Mini the same difficulty as the Crossword?

No. The Mini is a separate, much smaller puzzle with the same clue style, and the Monday to Saturday curve belongs to the full crossword. The Midi crossword sits between the two in size.

Is it normal to fail a Saturday?

Yes. It is the hardest puzzle of the week by design. If one corner holds you up, the day’s Crossword answers page lets you check one clue at a time, and the Crossword hub has more.
